Bakersfield is the hub both corridors on this site hang from: the Grapevine arrives from the south, Tehachapi leaves to the east, and SR-99 runs north up the valley. Its weather is San Joaquin Valley weather, hot in summer and fog bound on winter mornings, and it is a famously poor guide to either pass. Tule fog that closes nothing in the mountains can shut down the valley floor roads around town while both passes run clear above it.
The city's driving life is freight and agriculture: warehouses, oil services, and food processing, all of it moving over these two passes. Six of the nine SR-58 cameras on this site are Bakersfield city frames, which makes this the best camera covered town on either corridor, a fact that says more about the valley's traffic engineering than about the mountains.

From Bakersfield: the Grapevine is SR-99 south to I-5, about 15 minutes to the foot of the grade. Tehachapi is SR-58 east from anywhere in town.
