Boron is the desert run's one town: a borax mining community on SR-58 between Mojave and Barstow, named for the element in the ground under it, home to one of the largest open pit borate mines on earth and the Twenty Mule Team story that made borax famous. Its weather is pure Mojave: wind, sun, and long temperature swings, with winter nights that freeze hard at 2,500 feet.
For drivers, Boron is the desert segment's reality check and its only fuel between Mojave and Barstow. The Kramer Junction cameras just east of town are the corridor's last frames before Barstow, and a wind event showing at Boron is a wind event for the whole eastern half of the corridor.
Driving note
Boron sits about 35 miles west of Barstow and 35 east of Mojave on SR-58. Do not pass its fuel stop low on the desert run.
